What the trial found
Same landmark study as our separation page — forty dogs, blinded crossover, a single 4 mg/kg dose two hours before a standardized car journey. The CBD condition showed reduced stress markers, including lower cortisol and fewer stress behaviors, compared to placebo on the identical drive.
One honest nuance: the car context produced a smaller, less uniform effect than separation. Cars stack multiple stressors — noise, vibration, motion, and for some dogs, a learned "car = vet" association. Chemistry helps with the arousal; it can't unlearn the association for them.
The protocol that mirrors the study
- Two hours before departure, 4 mg/kg with a small fatty snack (your dog's number).
- Rule out motion sickness first — vomiting and drooling once moving is a different problem with a different (prescription) fix.
- Rebuild the association in parallel: parked-car treats, then engine-on, then around the block. Five minutes a day beats one heroic road trip.
- Secure them: a crash-tested harness or crate — restraint itself lowers stress for many dogs once habituated.
